The Land Rover Defender was launched in 1983 as a replacement to the Land Rover Series. The vehicle was known simply as the Land Rover One Ten. In 1984 the model known as the Land Rover Ninety was also launched. The numbers 110 and 90 referred to the models’ wheelbase length in inches (even if the 90’s wheel-base was actually 93 inches). In 1985 the Land Rover 130 was launched, with its extended (127 inch) wheelbase. The only other Land Rover models manufactured at this time were Range Rovers. The Land Rover 110, 90, and 130 all displayed their name above the radiator grille, differentiating them from the Series range.
In the late 1980s (1989) however, Land Rover launched the Land Rover Discovery. To avoid confusion, with similar models now in production, the 110 and 90 were rebranded around this time as Defender 90, Defender 110, and Defender 130, respectively.
Cosmetically there are not many differences between the Defender and Series, with a longer bonnet and more prominent wheel arches being the biggest differences. Initially available in part time or full time four wheel drive the mechanical improvements between Series and Defender include:
The improvements to the engine (Defenders adopted a BMW engine in the 90s), meant that unlike the Series, the Defender could reach and attain high speeds, making it safer and more practical as a family vehicle, and for covering longer distances.
