The idea of a luxury SUV was initially conceived by Land Rover in the 1950s, in a project led by Land Rover designer Gordon Bashford. But the project was not fully initiated until the late 1960s, with the design finished in 1969, and the Range Rover launched in 1970, debuting at the Louvre Museum as part of an industrial design exhibition.
The robust quality of the Range Rover has never been disputed. In 1972 the Range Rover became the first vehicle to drive the entirety of the Americas North to South, crossing the infamous and roadless rainforest and mountain region known as the Darien Gap. Range Rovers were only sold officially in the US from 1987 however. In 2004 and 2007 respectively the Range Rover Sport and the Evoque were launched.
For 11 years from 1970 to 1981 the Range Rover was only available in a two door model. While not a true luxury vehicle, the first generation Range Rover was more luxurious and comfortable than the Land Rover, but maintained off road excellence. Later models enhanced the luxury feel with the introduction of features like power steering and air conditioning, as well as plusher interior finishes. Since 1981, four door models have been available, and enhancements like fuel injection have been made to the engine.
In 1994 second generation Range Rovers were launched. Powered by engines using Rover, BMW, and Bosch components the interior was of these models was luxurious. There were also design innovations, and the second generation Range Rover was the first to have Sat Navs fitted as standard.
Third Generation Range Rover models launched in 2002, and sported BMW electronics throughout. All third generation Range Rovers have an automatic transmission system. Fourth Generation Range Rovers offer environmentally friendly diesel electric hybrid engines.
